"Consciousness is the product of neural tissue"

Jason and Mark, you must forgive me for forgetting my neuroanatomy. Of course conciousness resides in the Conciousness Callosum, between the God Module and the fairy-land response center.

Pinker would destroy that fool Kass in an argument. Sorry guys, but the soul is an illusion. Consciousness is the product of neural tissue - and I know that's painful to deal it 'cause it sorta hurts your religion. But facts are facts, regardless of our desires.

A "simple materialist". I thought I'd heard it all. Some people are so far behind in the race that they think they're ahead.

Pinker got hit pretty hard all over the place by Leon Kass. I'm not entirely familiar with the work of Steven Pinker, but he sounds like another of the cookie-cutter "new atheists". Although I can't tell from what was written in FIRST THINGS if he actually is an atheist or not. Of course, if he is a strict materialist, belief in God (i.e. something non-material) is out of the question.

I did notice the F.T. website is down. It looks like they lost the website domain name which would be on the more permanent side. I wonder if that was on purpose or if someone forgot to pay the bills. It looks like a real website hasn't taken over the domain, so they could get it back if they have the money. Although... I did get a letter from F.T. this week saying they are in need of a hefty some of money. This isn't unusual. Subscribers get these mailings for donations a couple of times a year, but maybe this time they meant it!

I bought this issue last week. Pinker gets hit pretty hard by the line, "Someone who boasts, even for rhetorical effect, that ‘the supposedly immaterial soul can be bisected with a knife’ simply does not see that thought and awareness, like all powers and activities of living things, are immaterial in their essence and therefore cannot be carved."

Nice to see someone not standing idle when the soul is attacked.

On a side note, have you noticed that the F.T. website is down- is it gone permanently?
